Water scarcity in Bayero University is very alarming particularly in New Campus. There have been efforts by the school management, Student Union Government [SUG] and Fidelity Bank to provide adequate water at the university; unfortunately, all the efforts did not yield fruitful results as students still find it difficult to get water. 

The scarcity of water in BUK is unreasonable because the University has a mini water treatment plant that is located behind the Dangote Business School, there are also not less than five reservoirs across the student hostel area in addition to the Water tanks provided by the school management. Looking at the huge population of the University that is over forty thousand students and yet these sources are not enough to satisfy the daily consumption of students.

The previous Student Union Government under the leadership of Bilal Tijjani Paki, tried their best to tackle the issue of water scarcity in the University when he collaborated with Fidelity Bank BUK Branch, to solve this problem. The two parties drilled a borehole behind Fidelity Bank that supplies water to some hostels e.g  Elkanemi , Idris Garba, Sa’adu Zungur, Dantata and Umar Musa Yar’Adua Halls, yet the scarcity still prevails.

Lack of water affects students in the campus by hindering effective and quality education when they are sick due to available unhygienic water or when they are always busy looking for water within the campus.

Due to water scarcity in the campus, students often face ‘water stress’ which may result to depletion in learning process.

The Vice Chancellor had also lamented that Water Scarcity and lack of Public toilets are the major problems in the university.  The school management had already lodged complains on the water scarcity with Kano state government, and the governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje promised to help by supplying water to the university from Watari. 

Stakeholders and non-governmental organizations should come to our aid by finding an everlasting solution to water scarcity in this great institution of learning and others. They should also work hand-in-hand with the school management by providing funds to buy and equip the institution with advanced technologies that will help conserve water as well as recycle rain water to save cost.

Also, there is a need for the federal and state governments to come to the rescue of the University community by constructing a befitting dam and a water treatment plant at the main campus of the University that will not just be for the use of BUK alone, but also for the use of Janguza barrack and the newly established Janguza prison.
