The WaterAid, an International organisation, has restated its commitment to continue the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme in six states – Benue, Ekiti, Jigawa, Enugu, Bauchi and Plateau.
Dr Michael Ojo, country representative of the organisation, told newsmen in Abuja that this commitment would help to actualise its vision of universal access to safe water and sanitation.
He said it had a five-year master-plan( WASH programme) from 2016 to 2021 to realise its vision.
“WaterAid is already working in these states; we are willing to continue in our effort to ensure that everyone, everywhere has access to potable water before 2030. We will also identify with other states in our subsequent programmes to extend our WASH programmes to them,’’ he also said.
Ojo said that it was worrisome that about 58 million Nigerians still did not have access to clean water.
He, therefore, called on stakeholders to show more commitment to ensure that the WASH crisis was alleviated.
“Looking at the present level that we have attained in water, this year’s celebration gives us the opportunity to intensify our efforts to achieve the needed SDGs target in the sector,” the country rep said. (NAN)
