The WATSAN Director of Sanitation, Mr Yohana Galadima, said that the programme was meant to keep the children healthy and stem the spread of preventable diseases.
The campaign was launched at L.E.A Primary School, Kofan Kuyanbana in Zaria, L.E.A Primary School, Goningora in Kaduna and L.E.A Mando in Igabi Local Government.
Galadima said, “It is an annual event which started in 2008 across the world.
“Since then, over 200 million people have washed their hands in schools, health clinics and public places which usually is to be conducted on Oct. 15 each year.’’  
Galadima, who was represented by Mr Bashir Lere, the Project Manager, WATSAN, said that the event was part of the 2013 programme meant to encourage children to adopt healthy practices.
“It is about promotion of hand washing with water, soap and ash for the purpose of preventing diseases like cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever, diarrhoea and other related preventable diseases.’’ (NAN)
Earlier, Alhaji Ahmad Shittu, the Head Teacher, L.E.A Kuyanbana, urged parents to embrace the campaign by encouraging their children to imbibe the habit.
According to him, hand washing is actually a call to Islamic teaching to keep clean at all times which includes hand washing.
The Village Head of Goningora, Malam Yusuf Doma, appreciated the state government and UNICEF for carrying out the programme of hand washing in his community.
He urged teachers, pupils and the community members to cultivate the habit of washing hand with soap or ashes before eating and immediately after visiting the toilet. (NAN)
