Members of the Peace Corps of Nigeria in Kaduna State have expressed their readiness to work with other security agents to help safeguard their communities.

Arewa Trust Weekly gathered that there are over 9,000 registered members of the  corps in Kaduna State and their activities usually revolve round complementing the efforts of security agents in early warnings, as well as curtailing social vices in schools.

Some members told our correspondent that their activities were strictly voluntary as they are not paid by government or any organistation.

Ibrahim Samaila, a member of Peace Corps in Kaduna North said, “We are Nigerians and youths, so we do this to help safeguard our communities.”

Speaking with Arewa Trust Weekly, the Kaduna State commandant of the organisation, Sunday Bayei, said there were about 4,000 registered members within Kaduna metropolis alone.

“Our main aim is to curtail social vices, and that is why you see our members in schools where they try to curtail exam malpractices. They also safeguard the schools from intruders and enforce discipline,” he said.

Bayei said because they were not employed by government, they were not being paid, neither were they entitled to any form of funding or assistance from government. He, however, said they were sustained through enlistment forms, registration fees, annual  identity card renewals, periodical fees, levies, grants and gifts.
