In a chat with reporters, Deshi added that he was sure that with the efforts being made by the various golf clubs in the country, Nigeria would be one of the first set of countries to compete for medals in the maiden Olympics golf event.
He also expressed delight at the inclusion of the sport as one of the games to feature in Brazil in two years’ time saying it will afford Nigerians the opportunity to participate.
“We have already been directed by the National Sports Commission to go to the grassroots and preach the message of golf to all nooks and crannies and we have been selecting those we think have the potential of bringing honour to Nigeria and camp them until the Olympics time“  Deshi said.
The president however advocated for more female participation in golf, saying that negotiations were going on for affordable membership fee for women and children.
“We have been talking to all the golf clubs in Nigeria, both private and public golf clubs to give women and children special concession for membership.
“Membership of some of these clubs is not expensive; so we are talking to them to give women, young ladies affordable fees for membership to encourage them,“ he concluded
Golf is returning to the Olympics after a 112-year absence. But legal challenges, disputes over land ownership and questions regarding the course’s impact on a fragile ecosystem are still threatening the planned events.
