I am happy to read that the Niger State government is re-introducing teacher collages in the state. It is a good move that will impact on the educational development of the state and the country in general. For the state especially, it will address the shortage of highly skilled and trained teachers in primary schools.

There is no gain repeating here that teacher training collages have played a vital role in promoting and providing quality education, especially in the period between the 1960s and mid 1980s. It was due to their absence that graduates are forced to acquire teaching skills through various sandwich programmes that merely confers them certificates without the necessary knowledge to prepare them as career teachers.

In our days, students for teaching jobs were selected at the point of interview after passing the Common Entrance Examination.

I wish the northern state governors will learn and copy from Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, so that they will help revive the educational sector in the entire region.
