The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says it doesn’t charge for National Identification Number (NIN) data modifications on its portal in dollars or other foreign currencies.
The NIMC denial came yesterday following the public backlash after some Nigerians on social media accused the agency of charging fees in the United States dollars for NIN data modifications on its portal.
Fees of $20.78 for changes to birth dates, addresses, names, and phone numbers were purportedly posted by NIMC on its website, but the commission denied this.
“Dear NIMC, can you explain to Nigerians why your website charges Nigerians in dollars?” a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In response, NIMC explained that the portal does not charge in dollars and attributed the issue to the use of Virtual Private Networks.
In a chat with Daily Trust last night, NiMC’s spokesman, Mr Kayode Adegoke, said NIMC only charged in naira.
He said: “NIN Change of Name costs N1522.5, NIN Change of Address costs N1522.5, NIN Change of Phone Number costs N1522.5, and NIN Change of Date of Birth is the highest priced at N16340.
He said all modifications require support documents.
