‘We evacuate 950 tons of waste in Aba daily’

Speaking to Daily Trust in Aba, Ikpeazu noted that the high rate of waste generated in the commercial city was due to the number of markets and increasing population of the city.
He further disclosed that the government through the agency was planning to establish a recycling plant in the city to turn the quantum of waste generated for economic advantage and wealth creation.
“Today, we evacuate between 800 and 950 tons of waste on daily basis within the city metropolis. When we do our evacuations in the evening, we usually go with about eight garbage compactors which have a capacity of 30 tons. So, if you multiply the 30 by 8. You get about 240. Then, we have about almost 33 refuse receptacles which take more than 20 tons every day. So, if you put all these together, you will see that we are getting about 800 tons of refuse from the city centre every day. Then, if you factor in the waste from Ariaria and from along the expressway as well as Ogbor hill area, you will discover that it goes beyond 950 metric tons,” he said.
He added that this has posed a major challenge on dump operations which he said was critical to waste management. He stressed that his agency was employing every proactive means of modernizing it for better use.
