Pastor Oritsejafor, however, said there is need to celebrate the golden jubilee as a mark of gratitude to God for keeping the nation together over the past 50 years.

The CAN president who spoke with journalists last Tuesday in Abuja during the maiden media roundtable under his leadership, said, “we have had leaders who are heartless. They have no conscience,” stressing that Nigerians should be ready to guard their votes this coming general elections so that the right leaders will be elected.

“Let me first and foremost give all praise to the Almighty God for His faithfulness and kindness for preserving us as a nation. By His mercies, we have been kept together in the last 50 years and have survived several calamities that have threatened our corporate existence as a nation. To God be all the Glory,” he said.

He added: “As you know, our nation faces critical months ahead as we move towards general elections. Nigeria must get it right as regards credible elections. I use this medium to encourage every one who is eligible to vote to ensure they register to vote when voters registration exercise begins. CAN will ensure that as many Nigerians under our watch who are eligible to vote exercise their democratic rights.
“We add our voice to say that every vote must count in this forthcoming elections. We commend the steps being taken by INEC so far in preparations for the elections and I pledge the cooperation of CAN to ensure, come 2011, we have a hitch-free elections organised in this country.”

He said it is the earnest desire of his leadership to ensure that a new kind of leadership, with transparency and accountability, is enthroned, saying he is working tirelessly to “forge a new bond of peace and unity,” in the country so that both Muslims and Christians can live together peacefully.

“We are seriously working with our Muslim brothers to address the issue of religious crisis, particularly in the northern parts of the country which results in needless deaths and destruction of property. We believe that as Nigerians, we must all strive to live peacefully together as citizens of thenation,” he said.

He emphasized that his goals as the president of CAN is to unite the body of Christ, tackle religious crisis and hold politicians accountable.
Also speaking, the General Secretary of CAN, Engineer Samuel L. Salifu, said it is time Nigerians made a “thorough demand of the security chiefs” to maintain the peace and security of the country, stressing that the fragile peace in the country is a thing of worry.
“Nigerians and the President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, need to set goals for the newly appointed security chiefs and demand results from them,” he said.
