The commissioner of police, Yobe state command, Abdulmaliki Sunmonu, said they have incorporated hunters and vigilante to augment manpower shortage in their operations.

The CP disclosed this during the flag off of ”Operation Puff Adder”, which is in line with directives of the Acting Inspector General of Police, IGP Abubakar Adamu, on Friday in Damaturu.

Sunmonu said there is no country in the world that have enough resources and manpower hence they improvised to empower people through community policing.

“We are in the era of community policing where the people are the police and police are the people, our only difference is the mandate given to us and the training. The mandate to investigate, to prevent crimes, to bring the perpetrators of the crime to book to serve as deterrent for others to reduce the crime”.

“We have incorporated informal police to argument the shortage, the hunters are with us, vigilente are with us, PCRC members are with us, NURTW are with us. People are everywhere and police are not everywhere. There is no where in this world where police are enough, we did some invention and innovation to be able to police and provide security to our people”, he said.

The CP noted that the special squad code-named operation ‘Puff Adder’ would curb the activities of criminals that are on increase in the state immediately after general election.

He said that the command had arrested 29 persons suspected to be armed robbers, kidnappers, rapists and Fulani men shooting indiscriminately in local markets, at different times in some parts of the state.

Fielding questions on possible duplication of responsibility with the JTF, the CP said the JTF is specifically fighting insurgency while operation Puff Adder would build the internal security.

“Peace is gradually returning and the military are also withdrawing gradually. We are taking over to build the internal security operation and ensure safety environment”, he added.
