The Senator representing Borno South, Mohammed Ali Ndume, has condemned the multiple explosions that rocked Maiduguri, Borno State Capital, on Monday night.
The explosion reportedly claimed 23 lives and left 146 others injured.
In a statement he personally signed, Ndume described the incident as “barbaric and inhumane,” noting that it targeted densely populated areas, including Monday Market and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).
The senator, who is currently in Saudi Arabia performing Umrah, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and reaffirmed his commitment to advocating stronger security measures across Borno State and the country.
He said the persistent threats to civilian lives must be addressed with renewed urgency and coordinated action.
Ndume also extended his sympathies to Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, families of the victims, the injured, as well as the management of Monday Market and UMTH, where victims are receiving treatment.
“I cannot begin to imagine the pain and burden on our Governor at this moment. This is a deeply heartbreaking situation for him and for all of us. May Allah grant us comfort, strength, and healing,” he said.
He commended the swift response of security agencies and urged them to intensify efforts to protect lives and prevent further attacks.
The lawmaker further called on residents to remain vigilant, particularly as the Eid celebrations approach, stressing that security is a shared responsibility.
“I urge all residents, not only in Maiduguri but across Borno State, particularly in Borno South, to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. We must not let our guard down at this critical time,” Ndume added.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives, a speedy recovery for the injured, and lasting peace in Borno State and Nigeria at large.
