Owoseni, who gave the advice in a paper titled, “Celebrating our Rich Cultural Heritage” at the 2nd Cultural Day festivity of Royal Rainbow International School Lugbe, Abuja, noted that we must not allow our cultural heritage to perish on the altar of modernity and aimless assimilation of other cultures.
He said cultures, traditions and norms are identities of respective individuals and ethnic groups, saying that culture can be a potential tool to foster national unity, while neglecting it will easily lead to assimilation by others thereby making us loss our identity and relevance.
“Our native names, traditional ceremonies – be it naming or marriage, our costumes, the traditional foods we eat, the native songs and dances among others are all rooted in our cultures and rich heritage.
“In my view, I think culture remains a unifying factor for Nigerians; the government can easily key into this to promote peace and cohesion. We should be proud of our culture as it distinguishes us from other nations.
“I can tell you that most foreigners respect the culture and tradition of our country because of our diversity,” Owoseni said.
