I was wondering what could have been if instead of a pot-bellied old Army General with misguided ambitions to world statesmanship we had a former KGB agent, a judo Black Belter with a rigorous ear to the ground for national aspiration instead of aspirations of personal grandeur.
I was thinking of Bakassi instead of Crimea. We spent tidy sums of money on lawyers who failed us at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. They went and relied on silly maps drawn a century earlier by German cartographers, and when the silly court ruled that Bakassi belonged to Cameroun, our ruler went to Green or was it Brown Tree at the say so of a staid UN diplomat who was after his own biography. And wham! precious national territory was sucked into Cameroun.
Look at old spy/warrior Vladimir Putin. Not for him the niceties of Ukrainian sovereign territory, Ukrainian constitution, so-called international law or the threat of sanctions. Crimea was part of the Russian Empire for centuries, just like Bakassi was part of Efikland. Ethnic Russians populate the Crimea just like ethnic Efiks populate Bakassi.
All Putin needed to do was barricade Crimea and organise a referendum and, off it goes to Russia. Who said it is too late for the Army’s 82 Division and the Eastern Naval Command to barricade Bakassi and hold a referendum there? Crimea style, there should be two questions for voters in the referendum: 1] Do you want Bakassi to be part of Cross River State in Nigeria? 2] Do you want Bakassi to be an independent state of its own in Nigeria?
