Alhaji Ibrahim Mustapha told this reporter in a telephone interview that when he first applied chicken droppings on his rice farm in Jere rice scheme, near Maiduguri, he harvested very good rice yield and that even the grasses in the farm grew faster than normal.
“Chicken dropping is very fertile and good for crops. It is just like Urea. It is also very good for use as livestock feed. Most successful cattle breeders mix it to the ratio of 1 to 4 to produce nutritious livestock feed.
“Since that discovery we have been selling to farmers and people serving as dealers who come from Jos, Bauchi and other places. It is this insurgency that is affecting our market. But some customers still call us on phone and we supply to them,” he said.
Alhaji Mustapha, who gets the dropping from his poultry farm, said he was working near his poultry when he noticed that cows passing by always stopped to feed on the bird waste.
He said: “We sell a 50kg bag for N400 but around February when irrigation farmers raise the demand, we sell for as high as N700 per bag.
“Since then, we do not over-stretch ourselves looking for fertilizer since the droppings can do what the fertilizer can do, or even better. But you know applicability depends on the region, season and the weather as well,” he said.
