The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) on Thursday said it granted full accreditation to 20 universities across the country to run 58 programmes in 2017.
President of COREN Kashim Ali stated this in Abuja at a press briefing on the activities of the council in 2017.
Ali said that COREN accreditation panel visited the universities and inspected 87 programmes.
He said five programmes failed the accreditation, while 24 others were granted interim accreditation within the period under review.
Ali said the implication of failing accreditation was that graduates from the institution would not be registered with COREN to practice engineering in Nigeria.
He said the council also collaborated with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to carry out the accreditation of engineering programmes in polytechnics.
The president said the accreditation panel also visited 16 polytechnics across the country, and granted 44 programmes full accreditation in the period under review.
Ali said that post accreditation visit to institutions were not carried out in 2017, but added that the council had directed that non-scoring post accreditation be carried out in 2018.
He said 5,890 engineers, 421 engineering technologists, 70 engineering technicians, 72 engineering craftsmen and 61 expatriates were registered within the period.
The COREN boss said nine sole ownership, one partnership, 35 limited liability and two corporate engineering consulting firms were registered by the council in 2017.
According to him, six Engineering Regulation Monitoring (ERM) inspectorates were inaugurated in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Yenagoa, Uyo and Calabar in the year under review.
He said 21 reports were received and presently being investigated following visitation to organisations as well as sites of building collapse by ERM.
