The President of the Nigeria Association of Auctioneers, Alhaji Aliyu Kiliya, has advised retirees to join the association in order to earn a living after retirement.
Speaking to Daily Trust on Friday in Abuja, Kiliya said that the association has a plan to affiliate with some universities in the country for retirees to partake in auctioneering business to enable them sustain themselves after retirement.
Kiliya, who said many retirees can still contribute to the nation`s development, added that the policy of the government said they should go on retirement, “but they can still join us and continue their business for the rest of their lives.”
He said, “We have been to ABU Zaria and they welcomed the idea. They are also willing to give training to some of the public servants who are ready to join us for the procedures, rules and regulations that will assist them to practice this business.”
Speaking on the prospects in au,tioneering, he said the profession doesn’t require one to borrow from bank to practice as one`s knowledge and ability to do the right thing is what generates money.
“We have abundant jobs that auctioneers can do such as disposing of public property be it in federal, states or local governments, even with banks and all other organizations. Auctioneers can be engaged in all sectors. Most of our auctioneers are also engaged by embassies. They go even outside the country to auction, so it is a good business. I myself am a retired civil servant.” he said.
On the process of becoming an auctioneer, Kiliya said one has to apply through the chairman of the state who identifies the members within his state.
“When you apply, we train you, we give you the procedure, and the way the auction is carried out before we give you the license to practice auctioning business or you go on attachment to any of the competent auctioneers who can train you because auctioning has a lot of implications. So, we don’t want any auctioneer to have problems by breaking the policies of the Bureau of Public Procurement,” he said.
