The former governor of Osun State also predicted likely end to democracy in Nigeria, following the intimidation, harassment and arrest of APC members as well as militarisation of election process. The former Governor, who spoke with Sunday Trust in Ila, Ila-Orangun during the election, said many illegal activities took place.
He also claimed that most of the NYSC members used as electoral officers were brought from outside the state, saying that they were not the ones initially trained by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“My impression about the election is very awful. I’m not happy with INEC. I understand that most NYSC adhoc staff who were trained came to discover that other people have taken their jobs. As we are voting today, everywhere in Osun is militarized. And even right away, the security is mobilizing for more and more deployment of security men from neighboring states to Osun. What does that suggest? To me, it suggests that they are likely going to announce a result that is different from the will of the people. For these reasons, I don’t seem to have confidence in INEC. This is likely going to be the beginning to the end of democracy in Nigeria,” he said.
The former APC National Chairman said the Federal government muzzled opposition in the State by indiscriminately abducting APC leaders.
“Fourteen kilometers from me here, we have an 80 year old leader, a lawyer who has been in politics for a long time, who was picked along with about fifty others overnight,” he said.
He said the old man, who was believed to have been moved to Ede, was dumped along the way while others were taken to unknown places.
He described the arrest of the leaders of the party as political brigandage created by irresponsible government.
“Things are getting bad. When a leader does not have the capability to govern, he becomes cruel, autocratic and desperate to cover up his deficiencies and that is what is happening. Since the past few weeks, the process has been bastardized,” Akande lamented.
