The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has emphasised that it will not participate in the planned nationwide protest over the current economic hardship in the country.

Some youths are planning a nationwide protest between August 1 and 15 against the rising cost of living and economic hardship in the country.

Briefing newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, Pedro Obi, president of NANS urged students to “channel our energy towards constructive engagement and dialogue.”

He said: “I stand before you today as the President of the NANS to address the recent plans for a nationwide protest and to provide clarity on our stance, as mandated by the Senate of NANS, in her recent sitting in Kano State.

“At this critical juncture of our nation’s history, the NANS wishes to commend the unwavering patriotism and resilience of Nigerians who have fearlessly voiced their concerns amidst the turbulent times. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to the President for his exemplary leadership and prompt response to the people’s demands within the last three days, which have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to revitalizing our economy and improving the lives of Nigerians.

“Acknowledging the President’s efforts and support towards the educational sector. The introduction of student loans and the endorsement of local government autonomy are significant steps forward that demonstrate a commitment to the advancement and welfare of Nigerian students and the Nigerian people.

“In our last Senate meeting, we discussed various pressing issues and put forward several demands, one of which concerned the operational status of the Dangote Refinery. We are pleased to note that President Tinubu has addressed this issue, which showcases his responsiveness to our concerns.

“However, while we appreciate these positive actions, we also believe that more profound structural changes are necessary for the prosperity of our nation. Therefore, we call on President Tinubu to immediately intensify the process of restructuring Nigeria towards True Federalism. This system, where each federating unit develops at its own pace, is essential for ending the dependency syndrome of our current “feeding bottle” federalism. We firmly believe that this restructuring holds the key to a prosperous Nigeria.”

He continued: “In light of these ongoing developments and despite the current hardships faced by many, NANS urges the student community across the country to remain calm. We recognize the challenges, but we also see the progress being made. We must continue to engage constructively with the government to achieve our goals.

“We want to make it clear that NANS as an organization will not be participating in the planned nationwide protest at this time. Should there be a need for a protest in the future, we will notify the general public in a timely and orderly manner. Our focus remains on dialogue and advocacy to ensure that the interests of Nigerian students are well-represented and protected.”
