The Director-General (DG), National Pension Commission, Ms Omolola Oloworaran, has described the Micro-Pension Scheme introduced by the former president Buhari administration as one of the best pro-poor policies in Nigeria.
The DG said the commission owed it to the former president to expand the scheme for many more less privileged Nigerians to benefit.
She disclosed this during her condolence visit to Daura, Katsina State, the home country of the former president who passed away on July 13.
She described the former president as a man of honour and integrity, adding that he was one of the most honest politicians the country has ever seen.
“He was a great leader. In PENCOM, in particular, he did a lot to support the pension industry. During his time, as we all know, he cared much about the poor and people generally. Millions of Nigerians were struggling, and he helped launch the micro-pension scheme to ensure that everyone in the country who is less-privileged has access to a living wage in their retirement.
She said in order to immortalize that legacy, the commission owes it a duty to expand the scheme to build on the vision that Buhari helped to build in 2019, ensuring that there is fairness in the pension system and that the less-privileged also partake in the system and have a living wage in their retirement.
The DG said Buhari has led the nation with integrity, did his best, and left the rest for the current and future leaders of the country to build on.
She prayed to Almighty God to forgive his shortcomings, saying that though he was not perfect, he was one of the treasures the country had, and his death was a national loss.
