‘We work with farmers, others on tomato seed trial’

Disclosing this to our reporter recently in Abuja, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bicco Agro Products West Africa Ltd., Mr. Nnamdi Ukoko, said some improved tomato seeds among other products have been tried by Katsina State Agricultural Development Project.
He added that the varieties tried were confirmed as high yielding by farmers in various parts of the North and an expert with IFAD in Kebbi, while some are still under trial at Uthman Danfodio University, Sokoto among others.
“While we are ready to collaborate with individual farmers, farmers’ groups and agro-dealers on our seeds and bio-products trials, we urge farmers and agro-dealers in Katsina State to reach out to the ADP so that they can be carried along,” the CEO noted.
“Our bio-solutions and drought solutions such as AgriBoom, Si Sol B and AgriNim from Agrilife in India have also been tried and proven to be effective by experts and farmers across the country,” he added.
In an interview, Dr. Umar Aliyu of Crop Sciences Department at Uthman Danfodio University, Sokoto told our reporter that the bio-fertilizers they tried performed better than the chemical fertilizers, adding that the pepper variety tried also performed well, but trials on the tomato varieties were ongoing.
