Nigeria has recorded a milestone in continental youth leadership as Wealth Akerele PEN emerged the first Nigerian to be elected Speaker of the African Youth Development Parliament (AYDP).

The election, held on Wednesday, July 23, in Accra, Ghana, saw Akerele secure 35 votes against Senegal’s Nodinel Jegangni, who polled 13.

Observers described the outcome as a landmark moment for Nigerian youth representation at the continental level.

The 7th Transitional Election of the AYDP drew delegates from across Africa, underscoring the increasing role of young people in shaping governance and policy.

Speaking after his victory, Akerele expressed gratitude to God, his family, and Nigerian leaders, dedicating the achievement to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“I dedicate this victory to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. I also thank my home state of Ondo, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for promoting youth participation in governance, the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, the Minister of Interior, and Hon. Omoyofunmi Henry, Commissioner for Youth and Sport in Ondo State, for their unwavering support,” Akerele said.

Analysts note that his emergence reflects Nigeria’s growing influence in youth-led initiatives across Africa. They add that Akerele’s recognition of Ondo State leaders highlights how local governance can serve as a springboard for continental leadership. His election, they say, could also foster deeper collaboration among African youths in governance, development, and social inclusion.

The African Youth Development Parliament is a pan-African platform established to amplify the voices of young leaders, shape public policy, and strengthen cooperation among African states through active youth participation in governance.

With Akerele’s election, Nigeria reinforces its standing as a key contributor to youth politics and leadership across the continent.
