Wife of the president, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, yesterday said the welfare of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country would remain her priority until they get their lives back.
She spoke through her representative, wife of the Zamfara State governor and the chairperson, Northern Governors’ Wives Forum, Hajiya Asma’u Abdul’aziz Yari Abubakar, yesterday at the Daily Trust Women Summit/Exhibition in Abuja.
The president’s wife used the occasion to call for more support from Nigerians on the plight of IDPs.
“I would like to call on everyone to join me in supporting the Internally Displaced Persons. It’s sad and heart breaking to see women and children suffering for something they know little or nothing about,” she said.
She commended Media Trust Limited for launching various initiates to support IDPs in the country.
Mrs. Buhari in the keynote address noted that Media Trust’s commitment to the IDPs showed a responsible business organization committed to giving back to the society.
Speaking on this year’s Women’s Day, she added: “I recall with happiness the series of steps taken at different levels to drive attention on the plight of women, particularly in areas of health, education and other opportunities.
The International Women’s Day provides yet another opportunity to reflect on the condition of women with the view to improve their lives. As we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, lets us also be aware that progress has slowed down in many places of the world. So, urgent action is needed to accelerate gender parity”.
