Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, Minister of Transportation, has said intensified efforts is being made to mitigate the negative impact of transportation by striving towards a sustainable transport system.

Alkali stated this when the delegation from the 2025 Master’s in Transport and Logistics (MTL) Field Study students led by Engr. Dr. Remi Adewumi paid him a courtesy visit at the Ministry of Transport Headquarters in Abuja.

The Minister, represented by the Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Musa Omayie Ibrahim, observed that transportation was the indispensable oxygen in the life of every society.

He described the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Zaria, as the citadel of transport technology in Nigeria, vowing to leverage on its technology.

He, however, noted that transportation needs had come at a critical cost to the environment and society stating that “the Ministry had intensified efforts to mitigate the negative impact of transportation by striving towards a sustainable transport system.

“In pursuit of its mandate, the FMOT had undertaken certain measures to overcome some of the challenges bedevilling sustainable transport in the country.” He assured.

Sen Alkali urged the students to take their studies seriously, because “the decisions we make today will shape the future of transportation, the environment, and our communities for generations to come.

“You are from our own very most prestigious Institute of transport technology; the technology wing of the Ministry.” He revealed.

Earlier, Dr. Bayero Salih Farah, Director General, NITT, Zaria represented by the Director, Transport School, Engr Dr. Remi Adewumi, stated that the purpose of the field trip was to expose the students to practical realities of transport situations in the country particularly, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“While classroom lectures provide the necessary knowledge, skills in operational and strategic management can only be developed through exposing participants to realistic operational and management practice in the industry.”

Dr. Adewumi while appreciating the ministry for support, enjoined the students to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the exercise.
