The Head of Works at the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Engineer Alhassan Dakwoyi, has said Utako Ultra Modern Market will soon be remodelled to suit the status of Abuja as the Federal Capital City.
Reacting to a report on the market published in the last edition of Aso Chronicle, Dakwoyi who is in charge of the market said the council made a proposal to upgrade the facilities at the market since 2014.
He said: “The Development Control Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) had given preliminary approval and very soon the market will be rebuilt to meet the standard of Abuja markets.
“Before this time, there was a reform measure whereby demolition was carried out to decongest the market and pave way for a parking space.
“The shops will be removed and others will be built as soon as we get the full approval from Development Control,” he said, displaying the remodelling designs of the market.
He said the remodelled market will have new facilities and will be spacious, adding that the market will be built in phases in order not to disrupt the livelihoods of the traders.
“The new development plan has a fire service management office. We appreciate their concern that there is no fire station at the market and we are always ready to work with them,” he said.
Dakwoyi, however, said the fire service lacks the capacity to seal up the market as they were quoted as saying in the Aso Chronicle report.
