Wema Bank has secured two major honours at the 2026 Global SME Banking Innovation Awards, reinforcing its position as a leading supporter of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria.
The bank clinched the SME Financier of the Year and Best SME Lending Product – Digital Bank awards at the ceremony held on March 12, 2026. The awards recognise financial institutions that demonstrate innovation, measurable impact, and excellence in expanding access to finance for SMEs while setting global standards for entrepreneurship support.
Organisers of the programme highlighted institutions that are building sustainable ecosystems and deploying solutions to improve financing access for small businesses across the world.
Reacting to the recognition, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Moruf Oseni, said the awards reflect the bank’s consistent efforts to empower entrepreneurs and strengthen Nigeria’s SME landscape.
He emphasised the critical role SMEs play in driving economic growth, innovation, and job creation, noting that Wema Bank has moved beyond traditional banking to deliver more holistic support.
“Small and medium-sized businesses remain the backbone of Nigeria’s economy. They drive innovation, job creation, and sustainable economic growth. At Wema Bank, we recognise the immense potential of this sector and the challenges many entrepreneurs face in accessing the financial tools required to scale,” Oseni said.
He added that the bank has intentionally built an ecosystem that combines accessible financing, digital platforms, advisory services, and market opportunities to help businesses grow and scale.
A standout feature in the awards was the bank’s MSME Instant Loan, which earned the Best SME Lending Product – Digital Bank category. The solution enables a fully digital, collateral-free application process, allowing eligible business owners to receive prequalification and loan disbursement within minutes.
Executive Director, Retail and Digital Banking, Tunde Mabawonku, said the recognition highlights the bank’s commitment to leveraging technology to simplify access to credit.
According to him, digital lending models are breaking longstanding barriers and expanding financial inclusion among entrepreneurs.
Beyond financing, the bank continues to support SMEs through its digital banking ecosystem, including payment and collection platforms, advisory services, and capacity-building initiatives delivered via ALAT. Its women-focused initiative, SARA by Wema, also provides targeted support to help female entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses.
