A group called the Downtrodden Peoples Movement (DPM) has said it is consulting critical stakeholders and other Nigerians for the registration of a new political party, the Poverty Peoples Party (PPP).

 Chairman of the group, Prince Olukunle Bewaji, who spoke at a lecture yesterday to commemorate the 61st independence anniversary of Nigeria, said the template and foundational structures on which the country relied were weak.

He said Nigerians must join hands in rescuing the nation from its “present hopeless situation” to avoid total collapse.

“Instead of collecting stipends like N5,000 from politicians who collect billions in exchange and destroy your future, we have come to give you the opportunity to become politicians by joining our movement,” he said.

He highlighted challenges facing the country to include high salaries and allowances of National Assembly members, bogus constituency allowance for senators, salaries of governors and security votes, cost of running Aso Rock and lack of a definite structure that cuts across board among others.
