On Thursday, December 19, 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari commissioned 628 cadets who graduated from the Police Academy Wudil, Kano State, as officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

The young officers were energetic, vibrant and hopeful as they seemed poised to face security challenges in the country.

In his address, the president congratulated the cadets for successfully completing their courses and tasked them to be diligent and uphold the principles of policing based on national and international best practices.

“I seize this opportunity to congratulate the cadets of the Second Regular Course for successfully passing through the rigorous academic and professional training. With this milestone, I implore you to operate professionally, gallantly and courageously as we continue to make Nigeria a safe country for all law abiding citizens.

“The mission of this academy is to produce superior police officers that are equipped with knowledge and skills to police Nigeria with its unique complexities.

“You will soon commence your operational duties; therefore, you must always remember that Nigeria, and indeed, Nigerians, are of interest to you and your assignment to protect their lives and property. This trust must be taken seriously while upholding the principle of civil policy, leveraging national and international best practices.

“On our part, we will continue to fund and support the Nigeria Police Force and its institutions to ensure you deliver on your mandate. This is why we created a dedicated Ministry of Police Affairs,’’ President Buhari stated.

Some of the newly commissioned officers who spoke with Daily Trust Saturday promised to discharge their duties effectively, according to the training they received.

ASP Ukasha Kabir said, “I am really happy to witness this day of our passing out ceremony. We have gone through rigorous training indeed, but eventually, we are able to make it. I can assure you that we are well groomed here and we promise to work as agents of change.

Also, ASP Abubakar Maina said, “I can’t express how happy I am today. Actually, it is the most joyous day of my life. As you can see, members of my family are here to celebrate with me, and I am grateful to God.

“We are young and vibrant Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) passing out today; and I can assure you that we are going to do our best in tackling the security challenges in our country.’’

He said that with commitment to service and support from the Federal Government, the police would be able to face the numerous security challenges facing the country.

ASP Augustine Andrew also said, “Nigerians should expect a new face of the police in Nigeria. We will fight crime and maintain peace and order.

Also speaking, ASP Okoro K. Ejike said, “We are here to change the Nigeria Police Force. We are here to bring positive new vibes to the police. We are the new comers and I am confident that we are going to do our best to ensure that the police have a new face and name. Security will be well tightened. We will also do our best to encourage community policing.”

ASP Ngozi Anyanwu Helen said Nigeria and Nigerians should expect quality policing, a reformed police force. “We are regulars, and by God’s grace, we are going out there to change the Police Force,. We have acquired the required training to achieve that,” she added.

ASP Gideon Gana also said, “I am excited. This is a joyous moment for me. It is actually a great privilege for me to reach this level despite the ups and downs. Nigerians should expect high sense of discipline from us. I want to assure them that we will deploy high sense of professionalism in discharging our duties.

For ASP Farouq Masari, “This is the happiest day of my life, and in sha Allah, we have joined the police to create changes and bring reformation. We pray to God to help us.

“As we go out there, we are expecting the worst, but we are hoping for the best. Whatever comes our way we will do our best to tackle it, by the grace of God.’’

In his remark, the commandant of the Police Academy, AIG Zanna Ibrahim, said there were plans to introduce modern policing courses to meet modern security challenges. According to him, such courses include Cyber-crime, Gender Issues, Criminal Justice and Administration, Public Security, Intelligence, as well as Peace and Conflict Resolution, which would minimise the rate of crimes in the country.

It is hoped that the young officers would find the enabling environment to fulfill their aspirations and discharge their duties effectively.
