A farmer in Bauchi State, Alhaji Aminu Barau Liman Katagum, says they are researching on the best way to plant rice without fertiliser and get bumper harvest.
Barau stated this in Bauchi when he interacted with reporters at the 15th Bauchi trade fair ground. He said this is the fifth year their company—Golbokki ventures, is carrying out research on planting rice without fertiliser.
He said, “We are making progress because last year, where we used to get seven bags, when we planted the rice without fertilizer, we received more than 30 bags.”
Barau said before one takes the result of their research to agricultural development programmes, they need to take at least seven years. “We are still on the research and after the seven years, we will be ready to help all interested farmers.
He added that they process parboiled rice and provide rice processing machines such as planting machines, spraying, harvesting and rice milling and other types of machines that clean crops and removes dust from them.
They also manufacture rice processing machines, charcoal making machines which are strong and durable in Bauchi instead of importing them from abroad.
“Almost all the machines on display were manufactured here and they were made with durable materials so that they will last for years without damage.”
He revealed that among the machines they brought to the fair, there is a multi-purpose machine that works six times and threshes maize, sorghum, white beans, millet and millet. There is also a machine to make charcoal to reduce deforestation.
Barau said they have trained over 4,000 Women Rice farmers in collaboration with World Bank on how to plant, grow and process rice.
The women, who are into rice production on a small scale, have been exposed on how to improve crop yield and their livelihoods. They also celebrate bumper harvest after adopting climate-smart technologies.
