The pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has said it is yet to take a position on the 2027 presidential election or endorse any candidate.

The group also dismissed reports claiming that Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo body, had warned Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi against contesting in 2027.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election and is considered a likely contender in 2027.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze described the reports as false and mischievous, insisting no such warning was issued to Obi or the North regarding the 2027 race.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo, therefore, wishes to state in categorical and unambiguous terms that such a misleading and mischief-driven statement did not emanate from the dignified apex Igbo body,” the statement read.

“Every rational Igbo indigene, and Nigerians in general, know that Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide—today led by men of integrity such as Distinguished Senator John Azuta Mbata as President-General, Prince Okey Nwadinobi as Deputy President-General, and His Excellency Emeka Sibeudu as Secretary-General—cannot issue such an ignominious statement.”

The group reiterated its commitment to the general wellbeing of the Igbo nation and the pursuit of national development through justice, fairness, and equity. It added that as a non-partisan body, it has not adopted any presidential candidate for the upcoming election.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains focused on advocating for equity and good governance. We urge the media and the general public to disregard such insinuations,” the statement concluded.
