What are students doing with their mobile phones?
I once forgot my mobile phone at home. I was already at work when I realised it. I had to drive almost 30 kilometres to go and retrieve it. This goes to show how smartphones have become an important part of our lives.
One can easily travel without carrying extra clothes but very few people will dare to leave their phones behind.
Smartphones have gradually turned into part of our daily carry-along necessities, and because they are always with us, we tend to spend a lot of time on them. With this in mind, LifeXtra sought students’ opinions on the most important apps in their mobile phones.
Musa Adunni Nafisat, a second year student of the Federal Polythecnic, Bida, said her five most important apps were Facebook, Whatsapp, Youtube, Camera App and Google browser.
She explained that “as a student of Mass Communication, these apps help me to stay updated. For instance, the camera apps help me record videos and take photos and the browser helps in my research.”
She added that, “If I am to choose just three apps, they will be my browser, Whatsapp and camera because these can actually help in my quest to becoming a professional journalist.”
Zainab Haruna, a final year student of the Ahmadu Bello University, said her five most important Apps were Dictionary, SnapChat, Synonyms and Antonyms app, Safari browser, Whatsapp and Instagram.
She said the “dictionary helps me to check words I don’t know. Safari browser is for research and the other social media app is to while away time, while Whatsapp helps me stay updated with information about school.”
Isah Ummi Adesola, a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, listed her important apps to include WPS Office, WhatsApp, Dictionary, Quran, Facebook.
She explained that, “I don’t have a laptop so I use my WPS office for word processing; I do all my assignments on it. It helps me save cost instead of going to get them typed in a cybercafé.”
Adesola said her two can’t-do-without apps were the WPS and the Quran.
“I have stated the use of the WPS; I need the Quran for moral support. It is not feasible moving around with the physical version, so having it on my phone helps a lot.”
Hassan Muhammed, another student, said his important apps were WhatsApp, Facebook, Instgaram, Opera browser and Twitter.
He explained that WhatsApp facilitated easy communication.
“As a class representative, it helps me in carrying out my responsibilities of communicating with both lecturers and students. I use it to send updates to the class group,” he said.
He, added that Facebook offer him the opportunity to meet people both within and outside the country, as well as get to know about their lifestyle and culture.
“I am not a frequent user of Twitter, but it serves my news and information needs, I use it to monitor trends.
“Instagram serves my entertainment needs while the Opera browser helps me stay up-to-date on my school work without necessarily waiting for the lecturer.”
Usman Nasiru, a 400 Level undergraduate, listed Whatsapp, Facebook, Quran, Instagram, UC browser and Youtube as his most important apps.
He added that financial apps were not a priority to him.
