Criticism is legitimate in a democracy, because if you are not criticized, you may not know where you are going wrong. If, however, criticism is done with malicious and selfish motives, then it is a disservice to the society. If criticism is largely influenced to cause hurt and distraction out of sheer political rivalry and acrimony, it is also a disservice. And that is the simple reason why I have taken notice of the persistent personal attacks Senator Nazifi has been making against incumbent Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State.
If his criticism is based on legitimate and fair assessment of the problems of the state, I would not have bothered about his antics. However, where criticism is primarily focused on persistent fault-finding rather than objectivity underscoring appreciation of what has been achieved in the past one year, then the motives have nothing to do with public interest.
The greatest disservice any politician can do his people is to engage in distracting another elected public official at all cost, even when the man he is crucifying is making a difference. Clearly, Senator Nazifi has darker motives than he may readily admit. It is unhealthy to think that nobody is good enough except yourself.
His penchant for crucifying any governor in office to advance his own political agenda has shown him to be a politician who doesn’t care about the people he should be working for. The APC has become a rallying point for change and bringing this dangerous type of politics is not in the best interest of anyone.
This is not the first time Senator Nazifi has engaged in a personal crusade like the one described above. He fought former Governor Adamu Mu’azu because he didn’t endorse him to run for governorship. When Isa Yuguda succeeded Muazu, Senator Nazifi started to fight him for the same reason. He simply doesn’t see merit in anybody except himself.
When Muhammed Abubakar (APC) was elected governor, one would have expected any genuine APC members to unite behind him for the collective progress of Bauchi State. However, Senator Suleiman Nazifi would have none of that. Creating disharmony, division and distraction within the APC in Bauchi State is not in the best interest of the party.
Any serious politician worth his salt should not be fighting his own governor. He had every opportunity in the past to prove his electability as governor. How can you advance your own ambition by bringing down others at all costs? You cannot undermine the sitting governor without harming the APC agenda for change.
How can a politician that doesn’t recognize the merit of others realize his own ambition? There is no way the Bauchi State APC Chapter can wax stronger with the kind of negative politics being played by the esteemed senator, who is not behaving like a genuine supporter of the APC’s change agenda.
Nazifi is a senator. What has been his impact as a people’s representatives at the National Assembly? How many bills has he sponsored to advance the interest of his people? Apart from collecting a hefty salary – and allowances – at the National Assembly, he is yet to make any impact on the lives of the people. With this unimpressive track record, I daresay he lacks the moral basis to criticize any other politician.
