It also means to have a great attachment or affection for someone, or have passionate desire, longing, and feelings for someone. Thus true love gives the picture of the kind of love that is not only genuine, unconditional, selfless and very strong and deep.
These days however, people have different interpretations for it depending on how it suits their purpose.
Halimah Abdul Rasaq, a legal practitioner sees a true love as someone who always sacrifices his or her time, no matter how busy, to see to the affairs of the one he or she loves.
She said, “Time they say is money and not many people sacrifice this to see, touch, hear and feel others. From my personal experience there is nothing like time sacrifice. If you can’t give me your time and devotion then you aren’t my true love. It is far beyond gifts, money and what have you. Time is so sacrosanct because craving for one’s presence and having it symbolizes true affection.”
Folake Adedera, a 22 year-old student of Nasarawa Polytechnic said true love, to her, is caring more about the other person than yourself and wanting the best for them. She said that not many people can do this and thus the ones who could do with these unique qualities will give and sacrifice all they have to nurture the love and sustain their relationship with their loved ones.
She said, “So when you want the best for your loved ones, you can go to any length to keep them happy and then give them the best they deserve thereby keeping them emotionally attached to you.”
Angela Mathew, a beauty therapist based in Abuja, opined that a cheerful giver surely stands as a true love. She said that a caring heart will always give and as such be a helper and benefactor in the game of love.
“You cannot give when you don’t love. So, to me true love manifests in what you can do for me personally without any strings attached. If you find it difficult to see to my needs when I know you are in a position to do so then you are not worth to be called a true love as far as am concerned. Something must be done to capture and retain one`s heart.” She said
Margaret Solomon, a nurse describes true love as what we experience in any moment that we are with someone without having or believing any judgments about the person.
According to her, “Most people who claim to love someone don’t really love them, because they don’t know what love actually is. You can only understand the real meaning of love through the eyes of a true love. True love to me is more complex than you can ever imagine.
“Any one you are always happy with and lonely when they are not within range is your true love. Something indescribable makes their presence special but how it comes and develops should remain a mystery as love itself.”
She said the moment one can attach a reason to why one loves the other person then the aim of that love is defeated because love should be unconditional in the first place.
“I understand that one does one or two things to create the feeling of love, but then what happens when such things stop coming? And then the love will ceased to exist?” she asked rhetorically.
Bolaji Adekola said that true love has to do with the inner mind and not the outward.
“Infatuation is what many ascribed to true love nowadays and that is why divorce rate is so high. You love him or her because of height, shape, complexion or wears have compromised the principle of genuine love from the beginning. If you love me for who I am and can cope with me as long as I remain myself without camouflaging then I will see you as a true love,” he said.
For Collins Igiebor true love lies in one`s tolerance, courage, hard work, intelligence and above all compassion for that person we are in love with. He however said that true love without reciprocation can be embarrassing and counter-productive.
“From what I have seen before now when you truly love an individual and that person doesn’t feel the same for you, the aim of that love is defeated and will leave you high and dry. People will see you as a fool and even discourage you from falling in love whole heartedly against the backdrop that it is no more existing,” he explained.
He advises that it takes two to tango. “Both parties must have the same feeling for each other otherwise it won’t work out.”
