What is ‘Wahala’? Nnedi Okorafor, Venom & Black Panther to cause it in Lagos

Sci-Fi writer Nnedi Okorafor’s novel, ‘Who Fears Death’, won the 2011 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, and is being developed as a HBO TV series, adapted by George R.R. Martin himself. And now, via a set of tweets, we have discovered she is working on her very first Marvel comic-book. 

Okorafor, on Twitter, went: “My 1st story with Marvel, an 8-page comic called Blessing In Disguise, will be in the forthcoming Venomverse anthology. It’s set in Lagos.”

Another tweet continued: “It features a girl named Ngozi (a name that means ‘Blessing’), the Venom symbiote, Black Panther, and the Rhino. Wahala ensues.”

The last word in the tweet, ‘Wahala’, for those who don’t know, means a lot of things in Nigerian pidgin English, like ‘problems’ and ‘chaos’.

Okorafor also added that her story is being illustrated by Tana Ford.

The Venomverse will begin next month, accompanied by a one-shot anthology special called Venomverse: War Stories, wherein Okorafor’s tale will debut. The book is solicited with a cover by Francesco Mattina.

Okorafor, born in the United States to two Nigerian immigrant parents, is known for weaving African culture into her work. She is a full professor at the University at Buffalo, New York (SUNY).
