It is no longer news that Hammer, a film produced by Vantage Migration in collaboration with Royal Arts Academy, made waves in Nigeria’s cinemas for six whole weeks.
The movie captures the socio-economic labyrinth facing the Nigerian workforce where, aside from unemployment, which is on the increase, there is also the issue of underemployment. Where graduates who are professionals find themselves in industries that are not their specialities and are exposed to struggle financially, physically, and mentally. This very situation has driven many to desperately want to make ends meet, even if it involves dabbling in crime.
The movie starred Nollywood actors and actresses like popular Nigerian skit-makers Mr Macaroni and Bimbo Ademoye, Dr. Linda, Ben Touitou, Deyemi Ademola, Chris Uwa, Lucy Edet, and James Jibuna, amongst others. Reacting to the movie at its premiere while speaking with journalists, some of the movie crew and casts had this to say.
Mr. Macaroni, “I like the fact that the movie captures the essence of what the company offers. The message in the movie is advocating that there is a better way to “Hammer”. It also sets you on the right path when it comes to migration, especially through the study abroad route. Mary Uye recommended that HAMMER is not only comical but instructive. “The movie is an educational movie, spiced with some comedy to keep it lively and fun. The movie mainly revolves around getting people to know more about Vantage Migration. I like the fact that it creates an awareness for people who want to relocate that there is a way for them to do so, and a lot of people who want to relocate will get that message through the movie”.
Ben Touitou said “Hammer is a relatable movie . As a graduate in Nigeria is really not easy, navigating in the job market plugging oneself to what is suitable and the job hunting space is hectic. We opt in for certain jobs and get treated in a funny way. I am glad I participated in the movie and the movie is a great recommendation to young people.”
Another crew member, Ese, hailed the unique storyline behind Hammer The Movie. “For me, Hammer has a unique storyline. Most of the time, when I watch movies that involve people travelling abroad, there are no valid details on how it happened. The setting will just change from a local to an abroad setting—the proper film thing, just as the name implies. But Hammer brought this to light, letting people know there are many genuine ways to travel, and it’s not magic. It’s real and achievable”.
Overall, the crew applaud the CEO of Vantage Migration -Dr. Linda Iheme for pulling such a great concept in the movie. Dr. Linda in an interview with TV Stations at the movie premiere which took place on the 20th of August 2022 said: “Although there are many ways to ‘Hammer’ or to make it in life, especially for young adults and graduates, it doesn’t have to be the wrong ways”. She added that HAMMER is not just condemning and pinpointing the vices or the wrong things youths engage themselves with just to make ends meet, the movie also provides actionable solutions.
