So you’re the man behind Black Palms Record—what’s your story?
The name is Redzie Jugo, legal practitioner, art enthusiast, writer, music lover etc.
Interesting name Black Palms and really gutsy logo. Tell us more about your label; what’s it about and what’s BPR up to now?
Black Palms is actually a brand name for a couple of companies/firms I own and run. The Black Palms Records was given birth to a couple of years ago and we spent time just scouting for talents. Being that we are not in a hurry, we like to make sure that we sign on musicians that can perform anywhere in the world and who know their craft. EDGE is such a person, not only can he sing, he is also a gifted song writer and instrumentalist. He does well with live performances too and that’s the hallmark of a hard working performer. The Black Palm Logo is a black palm imprint—it speaks of a hard worker, someone who is not afraid to go down and work for life and living, for anything you believe in. Hard work, focus, perseverance, excellence, confidence is what we are about and this leaves an unmistakable ambience in all we do.
The present gist is this artiste EDGE—the guy is hot and people are asking when the single is going to drop. As his producer and record label, who is EDGE?
EDGE is an easy going guy with a deep view of life and a melancholic disposition. He lives for the music and is very focused and dedicated to moving up the music ranks. He has a unique voice and singing style, you only need to hear him to believe. He has been working on his music for as long as I have known him, working hard at it. I believe his moment of glory is now here.
We, as a Label, are glad to be in the position to midwife this process. It is not in doubt that EDGE is about to expose the world to exquisite, syrupy sweet singing, laced with the real life experiences, which men and women in Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world are going to connect with and love.
I say this against the background of the crass music culture that prevails, where copycats and unoriginality seem to hold sway. The single is called “Bad Boy” and is due for its official launch, and free downloads on the 1st October 2012. The promo CDs are also not for sale.
You’re based in Jos, and there’s been this trend of great music coming from Jay Town. Is there a Jay Town sound and what exactly is the Jay Town sound?
Jos is the Art and Music Capital of Nigeria indeed. There is love for art everywhere you look; art and music reside in every corner really. J-town people are really easy going and this disposition gives the people the rest of mind to enjoy art and the good things of life. The J town sound is really unique, it is exquisite, its sweet and deeply refined. You only need to check out the long list of Jostified musicians to catch a glimpse of this concept and appreciate the beauty therein.
Give us a sneak peek what to expect from EDGE. Why should we listen out for your artiste?
Black Palms Records will be unveiling the artiste and will be having a Single Sample Session (double S Session) at Magnum Club and a Black Carpet event. In all, we are releasing “Bad Boy”, the original version, the acoustic version and the instrumental for the enjoyment of all lovers of quality music. The video of the song will drop soon after. It is going to be a masterpiece to behold. Right now he is working on his album and a couple of other singles. We shall dish them out to the world when the time is ripe.
