With President Muhammadu Buhari signing into law the Nigerian Correctional Service Bill on Wednesday, I wonder if the change of name from Nigerian Prison Service would address the fundamental problems in the country’s prisons. Besides the name change, I would urge the authorities to ensure proper framework for the rehabilitation and transformation of inmates and address the perennial overcrowding in prisons while government should ensure adequate funding of the prisons.

Check those potholes at Kugbo

As one descends the slopes of Kugbo from Abacha Barracks along the Aya-Nyanya road in Abuja, there are very dangerous potholes which damage vehicles every night, as the road is very dark and being a bend, unsuspecting motorists usually run into them. No doubt, the existence of those potholes which have consumed many tyres and indeed many vehicles are a manifestation of the degree of neglect of the country’s infrastructure. The agency of government responsible for fixing such problems eg, FERMA, should please wake up and move into action.

Contrasting tunes on slain cops

The divergent tunes emerging on the policemen recently killed in the line of duty in Taraba State leaves much to be desired on the state of insecurity in the country. One would have expected that the nation’s security agencies are on the same page in the effort to tackle the prevailing security challenges, but what one is hearing from the Taraba case is quite frightening. It is on that note that I urge members of the panel probing the killings to please to do a thorough job and government on its part should ensure that adequate punishment is meted on those found culpable in the incident.

Still on Apo-Karshi road

Despite continuous cries and complaints,  the appropriate government agencies have still not deemed it fit to complete the Apo-Karshi road in the FCT. The road which should have been an alternative route to the city centre beside the ever busy and ever tight AYA-Nyanya road has been left uncompleted by the contractor for years. It is quite disheartening that successive governments have not deemed it important enough to attend to it, even as it may be possible that funds may have been allocated but never went into it. The FCT administration, senator of the FCT and the Federal Ministry of Works should please check and tell us the status of the Apo-Karshi road in the annual budgets.
