They reflected the mood last Sunday when comedy enthusiasts gathered at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja for the ‘AY Live’ show.
The evening which began with a teaser of the award-winning comedy, ‘30 Days in Atlanta’ by Ayo Makun aka AY, featured upcoming artistes, like McTee, who joked about ladies making up in all sorts of unfathomable spots, including main roads. There was also Actor Mimic who showed off his ability to mimic several personalities like former first lady Patience Jonathan, ace actor Pete Edochie and the late Sam Loco Efe among others.
In as much as guests found it fun and entertaining the artistes did not fail to satirise everyday issues Nigerians are displeased with, through their jokes. AY and co-comedian, Elenu, made a show of this part of the outing.
They criticised the recent news about National Assembly members receiving wardrobe allowances, the deals and lobbying going on for appointments in a new federal cabinet among other matters.
The 2015 ‘A.Y. Live’ series, which kicked off in Lagos with the ‘Easter Special,’ is of particular importance to the event’s sponsors Maltina which continuously reaffirms its position not only as the country’s favourite malt drink, but also as the beverage of laughter, warmth and love, according to Adedeji.
“Communal moments which occur in the aftermath of a funny joke or during a wonderful musical or stage performance are the little things that bring families together and solidify friendships and relationships,” he said.
The event which also fell on Father’s Day, according to Makun was “a good time to bring friends and family together to share a bunch of laughs and lovely moments with some of the country’s finest comedy and musical talents.
He said there was need to replicate the Lagos experience in the nation’s capital because: “People in Abuja wanted to know why the show didn’t come to their city first, so it was great to be able to come here and put on a show for them.
“I looked out there and I saw happy people enjoying the evening with those who are important to them. At the end of the day, that is what this is all about.”
Maltina made it more fun as five guests went home with iPhone 6 phones.
One of the winners, an excited Rashidat Musa, who didn’t expect it would happen in Abuja after the Lagos show, said: “I’m glad I won and I’m grateful to Maltina for sharing this with me, a big kudos to them.”
Popular entertainers like MI, Phyno, I Go Dye, Elenu, Akpororo, Helen Paul, Dammy Krane, Reekado Banks, Ushbebe, Ajebo and others sent the lively crowd reeling with laughter and dance as they could not suppress their excitement listening to the artistes.
Satisfied by the turnout and response from the audience AY said: “It just goes to show that Abuja sure knows how to merry. The laughter and excitement that took over Transcorp today is one that I’m not sure they will recover from in a long time. We are very glad that all the planning that went into this was definitely worth it and we cannot wait to share this experience with Port Harcourt later in the year.”
A guest, Hadiza Sule, who attended the event with her husband and parents who were visiting, said: “I’m so happy my husband convinced us all to come. I almost didn’t want to and was initially upset they started late because I almost left. I’d like them to work on their timing. Otherwise, it was a very good show and I’m looking forward to the next.”
