New author, Marvellous Michael showcased her debut novel ‘Birthmarked’ recently in Abuja. The red carpet event which took place at the Shehu Yar’adua Centre and included a book reading was chaired by veteran journalist and author Orji Ogbonnaya Orji.
Family, friends and well-wishers all congratulated the author while taking snapshots.
The book launch kicked off with the host, Sa’adatu Hamu thanking the guests for attending followed by an opening speech by the Chairman of the occasion during which he urged youths to think outside the box and commended the author for being a role model.
Amongst those sitting on the high table with Marvellous was her parent, Mr. Lawrence Socha; the Cultural Affairs Officer at the American Embassy and Mr. Orji.
Afterwards, the author’s brothers, Emmanuel and Iriayo Michael took the stage to give a hearty biography of their sister who had begun writing right from the age of 15. Marvellous also read a few pages from her novel.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the 325-page fiction novel and a performance by the Playback Nigeria theatre group.
Marvellous is an Economics graduate from Covenant University in Ogun State and is currently a practicing auditor. For her first short film ‘Samira’, she was awarded a scholarship by Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) to study film in France in September 2017.
