When nagging becomes a bargaining chip

Women are believed to nag a lot. And it is also believed that if a woman has something else to dissipate her energy on, she will not have the time and strength to nag all day. However, many fail to realize that nagging starts from frequent requests or demands not met.

Nagging is something not many men like when it comes to their relationship with women. A nagging wife can be the reason for a man not to return home early. “My husband describes me trying to talk to him as nagging. Even telling him about my family problems, which most times he is unable to solve, is termed by him as nagging. If I had something doing, I would not be requesting, neither will I have to nag about requests I made,” Madam Felicia Okoye explains.
Aishat Adewale, 43-year-old teacher, says “I am a woman and know how we women can sound when it comes to requesting for something from our husbands and he ends up not being able to meet them. I am always an advocate of a woman having some financial independence, no matter how small. A woman who doesn’t have financial independence will at a certain point in her life nag about certain responsibilities or things her husband can’t do.”
Jamila Abba, 40-year-old lecturer, says all a woman needs is financial stability and independence. “All a woman needs is to stand strong financially, be independent and emotionally secured. Some men are controlling and their love for one is as long as you do what they want and even then, it is difficult to satisfying them. Only weak men feel threatened by the independence of their wives. Any man who is not ready to support his wife to be financially stable should be ready to be nagged. The most annoying thing is that not many would understand why a woman nags. But from experience, I have learnt to tell myself that there is more than meets the eye in every nagging wife.”
Atinuke Abimbola, 42-year-old banker, says “Making a request from a spouse in different ways and different instances is considered as nagging.  But unfortunately most women do not know that they nag because for them they believe they are just trying to make clearer the need for their requests.  It then goes from a reminder to a nag when the person who is being reminded gets offended. Let’s face it; most women are always going to nag, and most men will always find it annoying. It is quite simple, human nature; women will always use nagging as a measure of bargain to get things done or requests answered. I’m not an advocate of nagging but trust me; ones whatever she is nagging about is settled, the nagging automatically stops.”
