The fourth Miss Ambassador for Peace (MAFP) beauty pageant was held last weekend amongst 30 contestants at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja. The event was witnessed by several Nollywood faces, including Elenu, Eucharia Anunobi and Alexx Ekubo among others.
Pageants were selected after various zonal auditions with the winner to embark on peace projects at regional, national and international levels.
Competitors tried to outwit one another at various stages. The contest began with the introduction of the contestants who appeared in an all-black outfit and was followed by a choreography display.
They displayed their skills in traditional attires and showcased the level of their dexterity in their traditional dances.
Their final outing was in dinner outfits which heralded the elimination stage that saw to the selection of the top 15 contestants. They were Miss Anambra, Miss Bayelsa, Miss Enugu, Miss Gombe, Miss Rivers, Miss Ondo, Miss Delta, Miss Cross River, Miss Abuja, Miss Imo, Miss Ekiti, Miss Edo, Miss Kogi, Miss Jigawa and Miss Benue.
The contestants were also grilled during the question and answer segment which determined who advanced to the next stage.
Seven contestants were eliminated at this stage, paving way for the emergence of Miss Enugu, Miss Bayelsa, Miss Rivers, Miss Delta, Miss Benue, Miss Ekiti, Miss Cross River and Miss Jigawa.
Miss Judith Okwunodu representing Delta beat the other seven contestants to emerge the 2015 Miss Ambassador for Peace queen.
The competition also saw the emergence of various queens for the zones to assist in passing the message of peace as it will be tasking for the winner to carry out such a responsibility alone.
Miss Enugu was picked for South-east zone, Miss Rivers got that of South South zone, Miss Ekiti was crowned for the South-west, Miss Benue bagged the North Central zone.
Other winners included Miss Cross River for Tourism, Miss Diaspora was Miss Bayelsa.
All the contestants were presented with certificates and awards for one activity or performance while in camp.
The event which had the crème de la crème in the entertainment and business community in attendance according to some of the guests was a huge success as they have been consistent and successful since the first edition.
Abuja-based comedian, Peter Ogbudu alias ‘Ghana must go’ said he has been part of the show since inception and it has “just kept growing bigger.”
Aside the peace ambassador beauty pageant, awards were also given to personalities for their contributions in their sectors for the year 2015. Top actress Eucharia Anunobi was picked as actress of the year. Alexx Ekubo was the actor of the year, Kiss Daniel was the fast rising artiste of the year, Oritse Femi was the artiste of the year, John Fashanu was the Peace sports Ambassador of the year, Emmanuel Ikubese (Mr. Nigeria) was the Peace personality of the year, Adaora Onyechere was the television personality of the year, MC Shakara was the comedian of the year, Mike Ugoke aka Godfather was the media icon of the year amongst other award recipients.
Empress Njamah described the initiative as commendable saying: “It is not one of those pageants where the contestants have to pay or compromise to be the winner.”
She added that the event was miles ahead of some pageants held in the Abuja, which are tied to fraudulence.
Concurring with Njamah, a comedian, Oni Lukman alias Ambassador Wahala called on the president of the Pageant Association of Nigeria, Ejiro Ekiro, to stop all pageant organisers from giving out their queens to men for sex. For him, it has become a trend in the system where the organisers have become pimps “and these girls always come back to complain to me.”
He called for the elimination of beauty pageant bodies without an aim or focus so that the genuine ones can be identified.
The organiser and project director, Mr. Kingsley Amafibe said his agency has been a vehicle of peace around the country and beyond.
“Peace education among the youth has been one of the major focuses for the queens and the agency. The youth seem to be the most vulnerable people who could easily be used as instruments for war hence the need to educate and enlighten them on the need to shun violence,” he said.
