Discrimination of patients because of their state of origin, religion or tribe at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) is on the increase daily. 

JUTH is a federal government hospital, yet there is a high level of ill treatment of some patients. 

Recently, a viral video shows a nurse “explaining” things that women who attend JUTH should do to get attended.   

Speaking in the video in Hausa language, the nurse said, “There is no such tribe in Jos North as Hausa.” 

She was so insensitive to mention that Hausa-Fulani are not citizens of Jos, claiming that only Buji, Anaguta, Jarawa and Berom are the tribes in Jos.  

In her claim, she said their computer system shut down whenever Hausa-Fulani was being searched as a tribe in Jos North LGA.  

She also said “state of origin” was different from “state of residence”, with the example that if someone from Ogbomoso came to Plateau State, that person could only claim Oyo as state of origin and Plateau as state of residence, hence that patients whose tribes were not among Plateau tribes listed in the computer would not have access to healthcare in the hospital with ease.  

The question is: where is the oath taken by health professionals to protect and save life irrespective of religion, tribe, ethnicity race and class? 

What is happening in JUTH is a war against humanity.

Therefore, we are calling on the federal government, especially the Ministry of Health, to investigate the happenings at JUTH and take proper action. 

This perpetual act of discrimination by the hospital must stop and the management sanctioned.
