One of such cases is the painful story of Mr Jefferson Nosa Bernard. Bernard who was Chief Executive Officer of the Mandate Global Integrated Nigeria Ltd, an oil and gas company that used to lift petroleum products from the Niger Delta Depot Warri was chased away by the militants last year for “not being an indigene” of the locality.

Ogoni militants had in December 2008 written Bernard, warning him to leave Warri for good. The letter was taken to the police but they could do nothing about it. The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPI) was also intimated with this development but the office was helpless.

Before this happened, the marketer had already paid N8 million for products. When the militants saw the company’s truck in Warri they flared up and rose against him.

Not long after that, some armed men invaded Bernard’s house in Benin, Edo State searching frantically for him. He fled Benin for Lagos. The armed men still trailed him.

On August 28, 2009, the some armed men invaded Bernard’s brother’s house in Lagos believing he was there to maybe kidnap or maim or kill him. Two months after this incident, nobody has heard from Bernard in Nigeria. It is not known whether he is still in this country.

It is, therefore, necessary for Nigeria government to order the Inspector General of Police to look into this matter. Every human life is important. We have not got to the stage where citizens just disappear on the face of the earth and everyone looks as if nothing went wrong.
