This saying is particularly true of the staying power of Gen Muhammadu Buhari, who has emerged as the winner of the presidential election of 28th March, 2015, after defeating incumbent President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan with about 2.3 million votes. Buhari had contest three times previously, 2003, 2007, 2011 and losing each time, only to win in his fourth attempt.
In the history of Nigeria, this will be the first time an opposition candidate would defeat an incumbent president. This is to say that Nigeria’s democracy is evolving, and no longer dependent on the false premise that it should be taken as given that the incumbent president must be re-elected.
Also the reaction of the President Jonathan, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in conceding defeat to the winner Gen Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) even before the final vote tally was being added, showed his good faith. Having been the first to congratulate the winner also shows that he is a man of peace, who believes that his ambition is not spilling anyone’s blood for.
The youths among us should emulate these qualities of having perseverance and also of accepting whatsoever comes their way in good faith since they are the future leaders of this great nation. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
