Most women are very keen when it comes to dressing up for an occasion, work or casual outing than their men counterparts. This has generated lots of argument on why women pay special attention comes to dressing. The question, therefore, is, who are they really dressing to please?
Popular American actress and singer, Anne Hathaway, once said, “Most women dress for their most fashionable friends,” but her assertion seems wrong to certain women that have divergent opinions on why and for who they dress up.
Homefront sought the opinions of some women on who they dress to impress, themselves, men, friends or for the fun of it.
Mrs. Cecelia Atteh said she dressed for herself because it made her feel empowered, good and smart and that sometimes she dressed for her husband.
Mrs. Atteh added that the occasion she was going for also dictated how she dressed.
“For instance, how I dress for work is different from how I dress for special occasions like wedding. For weddings, I may be loud in my dressing; wearing gorgeous attires with accessories that add beauty and colour, but for work, smart outfits that still look good are preferred,” she said.
She added that when she had an important presentation at work and needed to be at her professional best and in control, she dressed to feel charismatic and confident and to impress her colleagues.
An undergraduate, Onyinye Chukwuka, said when she was out with her girlfriends, she dressed to impress them because only her friends would truly appreciate the effort gone into styling her hair and what she put on.
Onyinye also said she dressed to receive beautiful comments, adding that whenever she dressed up and went out and no one passed a comment she felt she did not dress well. “When a positive comment is passed on how I dress; my hair style or the kind of shoe I wear, it makes me feel good and helps me to keep looking good,” she said.
Mrs. Bilikisu Umar said women dressed to make themselves feel beautiful, confident, comfortable, special, loved, pampered and alive.
“There’s nothing rarer or more beautiful than a woman being unapologetically herself; comfortable in her perfect imperfection. To me, that is the true essence of beauty,” she said.
Mrs. Umar also said dressing up was a woman’s way of being herself, and added that some women dressed up to impress their husbands; to make them happy and proud.
“I consider my husband any time I dress up. I don’t wear what he doesn’t like because he is the first person that will always comment on how I dress. So, I already know what he likes and I go in that line,” she said.
An entrepreneur, Omotayo Adeola, said she dressed for the occasion rather than to impress anyone.
“When I look into my wardrobe, typically I am attracted to certain colours and styles, depending on my mood, I may start with a top that I would like to use to create an outfit and then pick out the rest of my outfit based on the colour I start with. Then I accessorise to complete the look I’m aiming for,” she said.
She added that if she had a special outing with her friends she might choose nicer jewelry, shoes and her favourite designer handbag.
“If I’m going to a picnic, I’ll dress casually. I also dress for the weather. It all depends on where I’m going,” she said.
