The figures relate to the state of the family in the United States of America, a country some of our dreamy-eyed young men and women and even some oldies would like to sacrifice even their limbs to go and live in. It said simply that each blessed (or cursed?) day in the USA, 2,500 families get divorced or separated. That each day, 90 children are taken away from their parents and put in foster homes because such parents are deemed incapable or unsuitable to raise children. Similarly, each day 1,000 girls become unwed mothers and each day 4,000 babies are killed through abortion. Frightening, staggering statistics, won’t you say?
I had recorded the information in my creative file with a view to using it for a commentary one day soon. Apparently because of the avalanche of issues to comment on in this ever eventful Information Age, I forgot it. Until that two days ago. I cannot now remember how long ago I got the statistics. But going through it, I felt that even if it was valid for the USA of about five or more years ago, it would still be valid today. The situation it described or the concern it was trying to raise may not have improved; on the contrary, it has gotten even worse. I therefore came to the conclusion that it was still good material worth saying a word or two about.
From this figures, I am prompted to ask some of our countrymen and women who are dying to go and live in America, the question: ‘’with statistics such as this, would you still want to go and live in the USA?’’ This question is appropriate because the USA seems to be a very a dangerous place for the family institution, the oldest institution in the world. Since the trend is not abating but is in fact growing worse by the day, my fear or rather my expectation, is that one day soon the UN or some other organisation would have to declare the USA a place unfit for family habitation.
For a nation that seems to take some malicious delight in issuing travel warnings and bans on countries it considers too dangerous for its citizens to travel to or live in, I am so surprised that no one has thought of similarly issuing a travel warning or a dwelling ban against families wishing to make the USA home. The USA is certainly not the best of places for families. It does not appear to me to be a family friendly country in the least.
From the statistics, it can be seen that every critical sector of the family is dealt a blow each day. At the root of the family is marriage. Since marriage is so lightly esteemed and so it is allowed to crumble so fast in the USA, how can the society have sane or well-adjusted children who represent continuity? Is it any wonder that the USA has become such a sick society that a high school child will wake up one day, load a gun, proceed to his own school and begin to mow down his classmates and school mates, including his teachers and then finally turned on himself and finished his own life.
Towards the end of August, a 9-year old girl who was reportedly being trained in gun shooting (not to become a hunter of rats and rabbits, mark you, but to kill human beings in the name of self-defence) was said to have accidently killed her instructor. She was being trained how to handle a very sophisticated weapon called the Uzi sub-machine gun. Some of us expected that this singular incident will lead to a massive movement for gun control in the USA, but what happened? After so much world-wide noise about the incident for a few days, the Americans shrugged off their shoulders and continued with their lives as usual. And the reason is: no one can, or is willing to, take on the powerful gun lobby in the USA.
In a move that many people who are filled with godly values see as a part of the End Times satanic agenda to destroy the family, the cell that replicates to form the nations and peoples of the world, there is a USA law that is purportedly meant to protect women and children. This law forbids husbands from beating their wives and parents from visiting corporal punishment on their children. While it is alright to do something to protect women against men bullies, this particular law has somehow castrated men and made them more or less figure-heads in their homes, contrary to the law of God.
God has expressly commanded that no partiality should be shown in favour of the poor or weak no matter how well-meaning we think we are trying to be. And once any society goes against this divine injunction, you will begin to witness another form of evil-the tyranny of the weak. Since men are forbidden from beating their wives or assaulting them in any way, some unscrupulous women who feel ‘’oppressed’’ by their husbands, go out of their way to engage in such outrage as bringing their men lovers right to their matrimonial homes! The aim of course is to spite and torment the man so much that he will seek a divorce or leave the house for the woman. A man who reacts is convicted and jailed. The woman takes over the house, a kind of coup de tat that renders the man homeless and he becomes a wreck in the process.
African men living with their wives in the USA are said to be the worst victims of this law which is decidedly weighed against men. Some three years ago, a Nigerian professor living in the USA who was a victim of this type of extreme provocation from his wife, was reported to have loaded a gun, shot his wife, their children and eventually shot himself in order to put a decisive end to a life of continual provocation, torment, affront and impudence he could no longer bear. In the American country, you cannot correct your wife, you cannot correct your children and you cannot act as head of the family for fear of the law so the professor decided to end it all for himself and everybody else in his household.
When the man is chased out of the house, the woman becomes the head and member of a single parent household. If two persons cannot adequately run one household, how will one parent be able to do it more effectively? So children, who must be pampered, and cannot be given appropriate doses of the rod of correction when they err, will grow up terribly maladjusted. They visit their poor upbringing on the larger society.
This comment is not meant to ridicule the USA. Rather, it is intended to warn some of our people who see that country as the ideal place and wish we can import to our country some of the fads that are steadily making that place a civilized jungle. Families may fare better here than in so-called God’s own country.
