Organizers of the annual Queen Moremi Beauty Pageant have revealed how a multi-layered activity lined up for the 2017 edition of the contest will make it better than the first edition held in 2016.

At a briefing in Lagos, Omooba Adekunle Adeyemo who was the representative of Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi said series of events, including quiz competition for both participants and members of the public, auditioning programmes in Ile-Ife, Ibadan and Lagos, boot camps for finalists, among others have been slated to add glamour to the beauty pageant.

Adeyemo also disclosed that in a bid to stimulate interest in the competition among ladies, the Oba Ogunnusi has paid N5million as form fees for the first 1000 prospective participants.

“Beyond the payment for 1000 prospective participants, the winner of the competition will be going home with the sum of N1.5million with a car, the first runner up with N1m, while the second runner up will earn N750, 000. The winner will also be allowed to accompany Ooni in all his trips, both within and outside the country during her reign while gaining exposure and spreading the messages of love, peace, harmony and selflessness,” he said.

The Heritage Ambassador of the beauty contest, Princess Ronke Ademiluyi said the whole idea of Queen Moremi Ajasoro’s beauty pageant is to provide young ladies with a role model they can look up to. She explained that beyond the idea of beauty, the competition also seeks to promote culture, tradition and royalty in Yorubaland.

On qualification for participating contestants, Ademiluyi said participants must be at least 5.5 feet tall, be between the age of 18 and 25 years, be able to speak both Yoruba and English languages fluently, must have full or half Yoruba parentage and must be able to demonstrate courage, intelligence, selflessness and bravery.

“For so long, we have constantly been regaled with tales and exploits of the beautiful Queen Moremi and how she heroically ensured that people of Ile-Ife were all protected against external aggressors. Her brave actions ensured that the sons and daughters of Ile-Ife, as well as the Royal House of O’odua, continue to thrive till today.

“Therefore, we have decided to organise the pageant to honour Ile-Ife and Yorubaland’s most illustrious queen. The pageant is being organized not just for the pomp and flair associated with such events but to show to the young ladies who are contesting for the crown, and the entire world, how Queen Moremi lived an extraordinary life of service,” Ademiluyi said.
