Why are they laughing?

I am curious about why this trio were so happy as to bare it all on an occasion that should have called for wailing. ‘World’s Teachers’ Day has held annually every 5th of October since 1994. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers. According to UNESCO, World Teachers’ Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development’.

The above extract from Wikipedia shows that the day is much more than people clowning around for others to laugh at. As usual, just as in everything else, the meaning of the occasion is lost on us. We think it ends with presenting peugeot 206 saloon cars whereas normal people will do stock-taking and proceed to wail should it be discovered that they have failed  as much as we have. Then, the will  devise a concrete strategy for improvement. Show me the efforts and not the intent to mobilise support for teachers. Teachers are not only the most ignored, we actually think they should be satisfied with tokens. Where is the plan or even the intent to ensure that they continue to meet the needs of future generations? Where are the future generations? Next year, another car would be presented to one lucky person while the rest of the teachers would go back to their suffering and our educational system would continue to rot.

This trio and their friends missed the point. As usual, they think the day is for merriment and laughter. And the poor teachers clowning to the pleasure of their oppressors, do not expect anything better than just a couple of them being presented  with cars, refrigerators and television sets? I suspect that the trio and friends are secretly thanking God that their children are not being taught by these ‘wretched of the earth’ making fool of themselves in the name of parading before Ministers on empty stomachs.  As for our dear Comrade Omar, I guess it feels good to parley with ‘people of power’.

As usual, the day has come and gone and we have done the only thing we know how to do; ‘celebrate’!
