The Bauchi State Government says it is planning to establish a one-stop grains shop in the state to curtail the menace of food adulteration.

Gov Bala Muhammed said this in Bauchi while exchanging views with the permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Omar Bello, who paid him a visit.

Muhammed said that his administration would appoint a desk officer who would ensure that all agricultural products being produced, processed and exported, met global best practices.

He said the state government would embark on sensitization of farmers and traders against indiscriminate use of agrochemicals, adding that 90 per cent of the population of the state are farmers.

Muhammed stated that in spite of the fact that the state was 100 per cent hopeful of discovering oil and gas deposits, it could not neglect agriculture.

He said that the state government was liaising with agricultural experts in sensitizing the people to drop the current practice of subsistence farming and embrace commercial and mechanised approach.

Muhammed, therefore, directed the state Ministry of Agriculture to ensure that the message on safe methods for food production, procession and exports reached farmers and traders in the state.

Bello, the permanent secretary, had earlier said that the indiscriminate use of agrochemicals on food items had led to increase in metabolic diseases among Nigerians.
