‘Why block makers can’t keep standards’

Speaking at a training workshop organized by Dangote Cement for Kano block makers in Kano last week, Suraj said if Dangote cement costs of N1,950 a bag, producing standard blocks will yield nothing to block makers.
“To be candid, the way Dangote cement is sold now, there is no way we can produce standard block at a profit,” he said.
“We’re taking into cognizance the level of poverty among many Nigerians and the zeal to own houses. We produce blocks that have more sand than cement to get profit and make it affordable to the many Nigerians that want to own a house.”
He added that the only way that standard blocks could be produced is for the cement price to be subsidized so that the block makers could produce standard blocks that are affordable and at a profit.
Earlier in his remark, the Dangote Cement Regional Sales Director, Johnson Olaniyi said the training was organized to create awareness among block makers on the right usage of cement and how to add value to their products.
He added that the training aimed at tackling building collapse, saying if the block makers produce standard blocks, the problem can be eradicated.
