Civic education is needed to prepare young ones for the future, Minister of Education Malam Adamu Adamu, has said.

He made the assertion at the national stakeholders’ consultative meeting on promoting quality civic education in the country organised by Riplington Associates in Abuja. The meeting was meant to review the current state of civic education and its implementation in basic and secondary schools in the pilot states of Borno, Enugu and Kano.

He said the infusion of civic education into the curricula of primary and secondary schools was aimed at “preparing young people to be effective citizens in democracy by developing democratic and civic values,” and also to ensure that young people are adequately equipped with knowledge and skills that will enable them exercise their civic rights.

Director, Riplington and Associates, Abiola Sanusi, said the group recently concluded a series of consultative meetings in the 3 pilot states to sensitize and raise awareness of stakeholders about the project on promoting quality of civic education. 

“This also included school visits that afforded us the opportunity to interact with students and staff. In addition, we have had advocacy meetings with NERDC and NCCE to sensitise them about the upcoming project,” he said.

The meeting resolved among other things that delivering civic education curriculum remains a vital mechanism for teaching young people about their rights and civic duties to function appropriately in the society.
